Today, the most common technologies for air purification from volatile foul-smelling compounds are based on the use of adsorption phenomena, that is, "capture"; of these compounds by the surface of a solid sorbent and further oxidation.
These phenomena are the basis for gas purification methods using solid sorbents, such as the oxidation of adsorbed foul-smelling gases with ozone and active oxygen particles obtained as a result of plasma-chemical or photochemical reactions. These methods may be applicable in cases where the end products of oxidation are also volatile. For example, volatile organic compounds can be adsorbed on activated carbon, then they can be oxidized, for example, with ozone to carbon dioxide and water, which, after leaving the surface of the coal, "make room" for the adsorption of new portions of foul-smelling compounds.
However, in the case of hydrogen sulfide (as well as a number of organic compounds with sulfur atoms in the composition), the end product of the oxidative reaction is sulfuric acid. H₂SO₄ - an odorless but non-volatile compound - the saturated vapor pressure of sulfuric acid at a temperature of 20 ° C is approximately 100 thousand times less than the saturated vapor pressure of water at a given temperature. The consequence of this is its accumulation on the surface of the solid sorbent and "blocking" sorbent for subsequent portions of hydrogen sulfide. As a result, the system begins to "skip" hydrogen sulfide or, simply, fails, requiring replacement of the sorbent.
From the foregoing, it follows that for the efficient operation of the system for the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide, it is necessary to remove the reaction product from the reaction zone. That is why we have developed a liquid system for absorbing hydrogen sulfide from the air Aerolife Scrubber. This technology allows you to automatically (using pumps and controllers) remove harmless products of the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide (in our system, this is sodium sulfate) from the reaction medium and, thus, does not require frequent hard-to-automate replacement of the solid sorbent.
The main advantages of Aerolife scrubber:
The principle of operation of a chemisorption scrubber is based on the absorption of hydrogen sulfide into an alkaline solution (1) and the oxidation of sulfide anion to sulfate anion (2):
The reaction product is a solution of sodium sulfate – a harmless, odorless product that can be disposed of down the drain.
